Sometimes time, distance or other unforeseen circumstances may come in the way of taking sessions face to face. This makes online chess coaching an excellent alternative. It is simple to arrange and requires minimal setup.

Communication

Skype is ideal for online chess coaching as it is easy to use, and involves all of the features we need. This includes HD audio or video calling, a chat, screen sharing. Screen sharing is not necessary but may come in handy during some lessons, such as when we are analysing games or positions in real-time. Skype also encrypts conversations making it secure and safe to use.

Microsoft teams is another good alternative since all of the features listed above are also included in this app.

Chess Site

Lichess is the perfect tool to use as it includes a free study feature, which is perfect for online chess coaching. Within it, I can add you to a new private study from where you will be the only one to have access to the content within. Each lesson will be automatically saved to the study, allowing easy access whenever you wish to use it. Our session will be run within the study, where an interactive analysis board will synchronise the position in real-time. Alongside the board will be the notation, additional comments, and highlighted arrows, making explanations of the content easy to follow.

A viable alternative to this would be chess.com. They provide many similar tools such as the analysis board, arrows and comments, with the exception that the analysis does not save. However, it is still possible to save and export it as a PGN to use at a later time. Additionally, compared to Lichess, a majority of chess.com’s features are not free (unless you are a premium member), which may make it more inconvenient to use.

Regarding the structure, the lessons for online chess coaching will be in the same format as the real-life sessions, making it an easy and straightforward alternative. To find out more, check out my private chess coaching service.
